Hi. I have been using FC for quite a while now, but I still am at a considerably beginner level, for none of the projects I have worked on have required as advanced of knowledge with the program as my current situation requires. Hopefully, however, it will not be as advanced for most of you out there. I am looking for a cloning effect. For example, I show up on the right side of the screen and then I show up at the left, while the former stays in frame. At some point in the story, they need to interact, so constant cropping doesn’t work the whole way through. Someone please help me. By the way, I am using a constant background. The camera doesn’t move.

“Cloning” isn’t the right term. You’re using a simple split screen enhanced with difference matte. You can google or search here for those terms, tons of posts.

However, when your two clips interact, you wil need to carefully mask all parts that overlap. There is no way to avoid that since your’e not keying, you’re matting the shots together. Look up rotoscope. It’s nearly impossible in FCP. Motion or After Effects or a third party rotoscoping filter for FCP are required to do this well.

Wishing you luck, this is not beginning type of project.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
