Upconverting SD to HD in FCP
Hello,
I have a question. If I shoot something in 1080p on P2 cards, capturing it, and then edit in my timeline at DV-NTSC (720 x 480), to save space, what is the best way for me, once my edit is complete, to upconvert back to 1080p?Also, if I am trying to save space, is there a more effective way to do this (ie: Can I capture my 1080p at 720 x 480, edit at 720 x 480, then in the end upconvert to 1080p.

I don’t quite think you under stand a few things. If you convert the HD files down to SD sizes, you will be loosing image quality. If you then take that down converted image and enlarge it, it will not look as good as the original file.
Think of it like taking a 8×10 picture and then photocopying it and making a nice wallet size picture. THen you go and take that wallet size image and photocopy it and enlarge it back to a 8×10 image. The end result will not look as good as the original in any way.
Hard drives are cheep these days, I would sagest getting a more drive space.

Right, I understand all those things.
I guess I am wording this wrong.
Is it possible, to capture my hd footage, down convert it while I edit it to SD, and then when I have all of my edits in place, take the framework for the editing info, and connect that info to the HD footage. So all of my editing would be done in SD to save time and space.
Are you understanding this?

What you’re asking about is traditional offline to online editing. FCP does this.
Where do you plan to store the HD originals?
You say you want to save space, but you’ve shot on P2 cards, and now you need to store the originals while you offline. That means you need a copy of the original HD, and a SD copy of the same footage.

You are the boss! That is exactly what I’m talking about. Assuming I have a place to store the originals, how would I go about this process in FCP?

The simplest would be to use Log & Transfer to import the DVCPro HD, then set up a batch export in FCP to export all of the clips to DV. Make sure you keep the same naming convention.
When you’re done editing, you can use the Media Manager to make a new project with the HD settings, and simply reconnect your clips to the original HD media.
For more details on using the batch export & media manager, refer to your FCP manual.
