    hy everibody.
    first of all sorry for my imperfect english i’m italian.
    I’m going to do a long documentary project shot with the Panasonic varicam and i’m building a new suite like this:
    -Apple MacPro with two Intel Xeon quad-core a 3,2GHz processors;
    8GB of ram;
    NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3;
    Apple Cinema HD Display (flat-panel da 23″);
    -Sony LMD-2450W WUXGA 24″ LUMA Series High-Grade LCD Monitor;
    -Blackmagic Design Multibridge Pro Editing System & Video Converter, like capture card;
    -Behringer B2031A – Active 2-Way Studio Monitors;
    -for the storage: Sonnet FusionD800raid 6TB, Dulce Prodq 6TB or Caldigit HDpro 6TB?
    Any suggestion, considering that i’ll work from dv to uncompressed hd (this last case occasinally)?
    I’ll appreciate some opinion and suggestion primarly for the raid storage solution.
    tnx in advance,

    emil

    All of those sound good. I prefer two computer monitors for working, but that isn’t a necessity. I have experience with the HDPro, and I reviewed it here on the Cow (click on my head at the top of the forum to find it)…but I do know that others have used and report good experiences with the Sonnet and Dulce RAIDS as well.

    Hi,

    I’ve worked on a similar project and three things I would recommend: 1) I would trade your Apple 23″ for two Dell 24″ monitors. These provide more screen real estate for a better value. 2) Add two internal SATA drives and RAID mirror them for constant backup. I generally put all non-video assets from my projects on these. Also, make sure your drive array is fast enough for multiple streams of HD, and configured with some sort of data protection. 3) Get an uninterruptable power supply (UPS). If there is a power surge or blackout, it gives you a chance to save and shut down before your information gets corrupt or your machines get fried.

    By the end of our project we had nearly 200 hours of footage and thousands of stills, titles, etc. If it weren’t always backed up, we would have had to hold our breath every day.

    [emiliano ferrara] “first of all sorry for my imperfect english i’m italian.”

    Welcome Emiliano! My family is originally from Calabria and the Rome area, I’m second generation American. Always great to welcome another friend from Italy.

    [emiliano ferrara] “Apple Cinema HD Display (flat-panel da 23″);”

    If they are available in Italy, consider the Dell WFP-2407. About half the price of the Apple displays and just as good.

    [emiliano ferrara] “-Sony LMD-2450W WUXGA 24″ LUMA Series High-Grade LCD Monitor;”

    Not a big fan of these monitors. Consider either the Panasonic 1700W/2600W or look at the TV-Logic 24″ display. The TV Logic is my favorite LCD HD monitor right now. It’s very accurate for color grading.

    [emiliano ferrara] “-Blackmagic Design Multibridge Pro Editing System & Video Converter, like capture card;”

    They cost more, but the AJA Kona series really perform better in just about all aspects of video editing. I tried BMD products in the past, but the AJA products just work better.

    [emiliano ferrara] “-for the storage: Sonnet FusionD800raid 6TB, Dulce Prodq 6TB or Caldigit HDpro 6TB?”

    I would recommend MaxxDigital and Ciprico in addition to the Sonnet and Dulce. Dulce will be the slowest units in terms of drive speed but they are a good product. I run two MaxxDigital SAS/SATA Arrays at 500MB/s each in RAID 5.

    Hi, Walter!
    Thanks a lot for your welcome.
    Do you know where i’m from?Just a bit in south of your family region, i’m from sicily and i lived in rome for 3 years.
    It is a couple of years that i follow the cow site, since i discovered it i don’t stop to visit everyday!its a great resource!also your articles and your video tutorial!
    When i read your surname i bet that your origin are italian.
    ok.
    tnx for your reply to my post.
    unfortunately i have just purchased the cinema display: i hope your suggestio to buy the dell WFP-2407 is only for the price!the quality of the cinema display is good too?or not?

    About Sony LMD-2450W WUXGA 24 you say:”Not a big fan of these monitors. Consider either the Panasonic 1700W/2600W or look at the TV-Logic 24″ display. The TV Logic is my favorite LCD HD monitor right now. It’s very accurate for color grading.”But the Sony seems to have more resolution (1920 x 1200 (WUXGA)) against the Panasonic 2600W that has 1366 x 768: is this not important?

    In relation to the storage i’m thinking to buy Caldigit HDPR0 because i can also use it with my macbook pro with the CALDIGIT 2Port PCI Express eLANE Host Adapter.What do you think about this?

    About the capture card you say:”They cost more, but the AJA Kona series really perform better in just about all aspects of video editing. I tried BMD products in the past, but the AJA products just work better. ”
    What do you mean exactly?
    I think the breakout box is really useful.i know aja has the I/0 HD but is more expensive.

    ok now i stop….excuse me if i’m boring you and especially for my bad english!

    i’m waiting for your kind reply and your professional suggestions.

    That’s why I like that unit. I don’t think any of the others offer this. ANd it is because the controller card is in the box, not on the card you install. The performance is much slower, but you can still get about 190MB/s on the MacBook Pro.

    As for the Kona and BMD issue, the BMD cards are plenty good and can do quite a bit. And they are inexpensive…and there is a reason for that. The Kona 3 can upconvert SD to 720p and 1080i, the decklink can only upconvert to 1080i. The Kona 3 can CROSS convert 720p to 1080i and 1080p…the decklink cannot. But the Kona 3 only has HD SDI inputs. For analog inputs, you need to shell out another $895 US for the HD10AVA. Or you can get the Kona LH that has these connections, but cannot upconvert SD to HD, or cross convert. But the Decklink cards work fine. Many people find the AJA interface easier, but I personally have had no issue with the Black Magic products. My first card was a BMD, but I find I need the options the Kona 3 offers over the BMD cards.
