  • G5 dual 2.7 vs 2.3

Posted by David Roth weiss on March 6, 2008 at 4:51 pm

I’ve located a G5 with dual 2.7ghz procs to replace my 2.3 machine that Applecare has rendered unuseable. I know the G5 2.7ghz machines were water cooled, but what other differences are there bewteen the 2.7 machines and the 2.3ghz machines? For instance, will it accomodate my ATI X800 XT?

The 2.7ghz machine currently has an x850 card in it. Was that as powerful as the x800 and capable of running Color?

    TIA,
    David

if it is, it should be the same.

I’m pretty sure that both computers are PCIx (I know my 2.3 is at any rate), but my x800 XT runs in an AGP slot on the 2.3ghz model.

    I have 3 dual 2.3 G5’s but they are pci-e.

I think they are pretty rare though, since they went almost immediately to intel processors shortly after.

I’m pretty sure it was less than a 6 month window the
pci-e models sold. You should definitely double check that or you might be in for a surprise.

The 850 is even higher performance but it has a fan that sticks out and blocks one of the pci slots. Barefeats had a lot of info on it.

    Hi David,

I have the Dual 2.7, Power PC (non Intel), and my x800-xt works beautifuly in the AGP slot. I think it was the dual 2.9 or something or other where they switched to the PCI-Express slots; just before the first Intel machines if memory serves me right.

OWC (macsales.com) used to have a section for identifying which kind of slots a given model has. They are also very helpful on the phone for sorting out these things.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi again David,

My bad, the guide wasn’t at OWC, it was MacGurus; the link:

    https://www.macgurus.com/guides/hostcardtype.php

My VAR seems to think the last few 2.7’s, the ones made just before the Intel machines, were PCI-Express. This document will show you how to tell for sure.

    Ok, I’m outa here now.

my dual pcix 2.7 is more stable than the apple duo core 2.3 pcie box.. i just think there was a reason apple switch core’s to intel quickly there after..
