I know this is not an FCP issue but i am not sure where else to look…and you are all very knowledgeable anyway!

I want to source some training for some of our staff, who as part of their job, have to write the scripts for the tv ads produced for the products they manage.

I’m not getting into the politics of how, why, etc….i just wondered if anyone knows of any course, either person to person or online, that will help them understand a little better how to construct a short script!!!

As we are UK based, if you know of face to face courses it would need to be in the uK!

    thanks

My first thought would be look at local colleges and universities that have strong media, theater art and acting courses. Many of these offer evening lessons and you might be able to get an instructor to do a one day class with your folks.

Also look at acting communities in your local area. They are always having “actor workshops” and many of these are for scripting / directing.

    good thoughts Walter.

We are on the same wavelength there…i have been contacting local colleges this morning.

I think i am probably going to have difficulties finding a course specific to the needs of a 20sec commercial, as all the ones i have seen so far are aimed at people wanting to write a movie or make a documentary, both of which are completely different ways of communicating.

I realise advertising is less about story and more about selling – but i need our staff to realise there is more to selling than listing features!

Quite honestly it’s still all storytelling. Whether a 30 second spot or a 2 hour feature. If they understand the basics of telling a good story, then they’re most of the way there. So the long form training would not be bad and then see if someone can follow up on how to tighten up those messages for the 30 second audience.

    Good luck with everything!
