TAKING TOO LONG
I am working with a quicktime file that was exported from another computer. It is not even a gig in size and it the same size as a file I used previously. I am using it in FCP and it is taking a crazy amount of time to process anything, down to moving the cursor up and down the timeline. All the other files work fine, I have no other programs running, but if I don’t figure this out, it will take me 20 years to do something that could be done in a few minutes.

What codec is this file? And no, “.mov” is not a codec. Quicktime is a wrapper that can be any one of dozens of codecs. And not all of them are usable for editing.
So, what codec is the file you are trying to work with?

What Codec, frame size, frame rate is the file you’re trying to use?
What Codec, frame size, frame rate sequence are you trying to edit it in?

Are you using the file across a network? Does the file live on another machine?
That will do it every time!
