Indicator if file is used on timeline?
Hello,
Is there any sort of marker in FCP that indicates next to the clip in the browser, whether that clip is already in use on the timeline?

I find that a very useful feature in Premiere 6.0… seems like Adobe was ahead of it’s time 7 years ago when that version came out.
Is there any other way to accomplish this in FCP?

If you know the name of the clip, click on the timeline and then press Apple-F…type in the search terms.

It’s easy if the clip in the project window has a direct relation to the clip in the sequence, and if you could only have one sequence.

Someone gave me this tip a few weeks ago and it works for me. Select all of the clips in your sequence then assign a color to all of the clips. It’s not without its drawbacks, but it does work.

Turn on the Detect Duplicate Frames feature in your timeline, then drop the clip in at the end of the timeline. If it’s used already, it will have a colored line over the bottom portion of the video track of the clip, as will the instance of the clip that already exists in the timeline.
The Duplicate Frames feature is in the little arrow menu at the lower left of the timeline.

you forgot to point out that all the clips in the bins also change color. Works great. You can also do the same for unused clips. Just highlight the seq in the bin, and choose find, the unused media. On the search results window label those clips a color and they will be labeled in your bins as well.

Great tip, Joe. I too miss the instance feature in Premiere, it was very handy.
