FCP Express to FCP 6 audio sync issues…
I am not an experience technical editor – I ‘cut’ my teeth on old tape to tape systems, but I must admit that FCP 6 is fantastic. However I experienced something yesterday that sent me back to my apprentice days: an unexplainable error in front of a waiting client!
He’d brought an external 7400rpm firewire 1 HDD with an .mov file and his original edit files. Apparently produced in FCP express. When I imported the .mov file into an ‘easy setup’ PAL 720X576′ project (I’m in South Africa using the PAL broadcaster) the scrubber line would play across the timeline output the a delayed picture in my preview window. In other words the scrubber was ahead visually. Naturally the audio was out of sync, being in time with where the scrubber was.
We tried opening his original file and it did the same thing. As it also did with another .mov from his HDD.
So I next tested our own stuff, and everything we’ve done in the last year played back perfectly. Am I going mad or is there a known issue with Express and FCP 6 in terms of sync?
Any advice, including psychologists numbers, would be welcome.

The first thing you should do is open the clips in the QT player and find out everything you can about the media specs and if it plays in the QT player. Does it play and what’s info say about it?
BTW, there’s no such thing as a 7400rpm drive AFAIK. It’s either 5400 or 7200.

Will do. As for the HDD 7200 thing, yes the technical guy at my office also laughed at my ignorance, till I asked him about FCP and it’s problem, then he went away. 🙂
