  Jumpy slo-mo in FCP using HD

  – I’m running FCP 6.0.1 on a MacBook Pro

  – OS 10.5.1.

  – Processor – 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

  – Memory – 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

  I’m cutting a sequence with 1080i 29.97 and everything looks fine except the slo-mo clips. They’re jumpy. Over at Ken Stone someone recommended doing slo-mo in Motion. Looked in the manual for Motion and found zilch concerning slow motion.
  Any recommendations for either FCP or Motion would be appreciated.

  Slo mo in FCP is pretty bad, and just send the clip to Motion then render the speed change within Motion3 make sure Optical Flow is turned on when you render and you should get a really smooth looking Slo mo.

  You will need to import the clip back into FCP and not use the motn project file.

  How are you monitoring? If its just on your MacBook Pro LCD screen you might not be able to see smooth slomo under any circumstances.

  When I send the clip to Motion should I do it at its normal speed or the already slowed down speed?

  I normally send the clip from the timeline with the speed already changed. When the Save As comes up I uncheck the Embed “Motion” Content.

  Then render the clip set to Best and with the same codec that my FCP project is.

  Then I import the new clip and replace it in the time line. Normally put it on V2 and just disable the orginal clip on V1 so it is still there if I need to make a change later.

  Michael, thanks…worked like a charm…but…

  …is it possible to fade the clip in from black? When I tried a cross dissolve from black in FCP it didn’t work.

  To use the transition you need handles on the clip which probably no longer exists on the clip that has been sent to motion. So you could just pull the original clip in FCP up a track and give it handles on both sides of the clip, sent it to Motion and then drop in into the hole so it has the extra frames need to do a transition. Or a fade up from black can be done with changing the opacity of the end of the out going clip and in coming clip. The latter needs to be rendered to play back.
