i recently shot a scene using the canon xlh1. it was shot in hd at 24. the material was captured usiing the kona 2 card and the sequence has been edited using the dvcprohd 1080i60 settings. the final format for the scene is DVD.

i have a few questions related to workflow, and i would appreciate feedback.

    1. i would like to preserve the 16:9 aspect ratio and use letterboxing. is this something that i need to do in FCP or is it something that i do in dvd studio pro? what settings do i need to use?

    2. the material is in spanish and i need to create subtitles. again, is it best to do this in FCP or in dvd studio pro?

    3. which codec/settings should i use when i export the material? i’d obviously like to use a codec that preserves the quality of the video…

thanks in advance for your help.

    Paul,

There are several ways to do this. normally I would do it in Compressor, it will detect that your movie is 16×9, (make a self-contained QuickTime movie from FCP at your project settings, not QT conversion) and then in the inspector you could force letterboxing, OR make an uncompressed D1 sequence in your project and put the 1080 comp into it, it will letterbox automatically, just make sure your field order is correct. Then export that movie and you can encode in DVDSP or Compressor or whatever.

I do my Spanish titles in FCP, I always have the script in Spanish in Word, and copy and paste into any text tool in FCP, all the accents etc. come in.

Export your movie uncompressed 8 or 10 bitb or ProRes.

    Have a wonderful day.

you can also do your subtitles in DVDSP, then you can turn them on or off on the DVD..
