field order wrong on transitions on PAL DVD
Hello all
A bit of a crisis here,Finished a video and am rendering, authoring then burning one bad disk after the other. (7 and counting)
It seems FCP is intent on outputting the wrong field order to Compressor… just on the dissolves I have in the programme.
All footage is DV PAL (Lower FF) but burning a DVD in pal is Upper FF.
The sequence is DV PAL
Render is set to same codec as sequenceAny bright ideas MOST welcome!

Im doing this on my laptop, so have no PAL monitor output, so cannot see the issues unless I render, author and burn a fresh DVD each time. -

What setting are you using in compressor and have you checked to make sure that your source footage is being interpreted correctly by compressor before encoding?

I’m using mpeg2 dvd fast HQ for 90 minutes setting, set the fields to UPPER (as it should be for PAL dvd) – see pasted below.
The whole video is really smooth, just the transitions between some shots seems either reversed or Progressive, but is not smooth.How would I get to see if my source footage is being interpreted correctly by compressor?

When in compressor, click on the box that is your movie on the left of the target. That will open the inspector for your movie. In the first tab “A/V Attributes” make sure to select the native field dominance of your footage. I have seen compressor guess wrong and the encode is screwed up because of it. Since you are changing field order, I would make your own mpeg2 preset as well and be sure to tell it that you want upper field dominance. Perhaps ‘automatic’ isn’t working out.

Yep, i did make a preset, and made sure it was UFF.
DV is lower field first in both PAL and NTSC, but in SD and DVD PAL is upper field first.
This project im sure has been partially bosched because it was a project i had done on Premier on a PC and had rendered all the AVIs to MOV’s.
Thanks guys, i guess i have to burn another 20 disks first ;-(

DVD can be any field order, you just need to flag it correctly.

You can probably cheat/reverse the field order by moving the captured dv footage up one pixel in your sequence..

its pretty mystifying,
all the footage clips are lower field first DV PAL, the timeline was on DV PAL, but eventually to get the job done I set it to ProRes Progressive and rendered out a not terribly nice progressive mpeg2 for dvd as a compomise.i rendered, authored and burned 10 disks, and got so many nuances from all the various ways I tried to get it all working fine. At one point I had the transitions smooth but the video running with the wrong field order. Some how FCP had it that it should render my transitions at the opposite field dominance as my video clips. No matter what I set the timeline to, and rendered out in compressor, I could not get both transitions and video clips to both be smooth.
I also had some Motion animations which were superimposed over the video. These were created in motion using PAL DV LFF settings, and these were smooth all the time, except when I set the timelne to UFF.
These NLE>DVD issues seem common in the PAL world when working with DV footage. Premier Pro also had issues, not defaulting to the correct field dominance when exporting.
When I get a mo I may do some testing on it.

How are you getting from FCP to the MPEG-2 file? Sending directly to Compressor from the sequence, or exporting a QT and then encoding that in Compressor?
