For what? Authoring a DVD or making a quick, simple DVD?
Also, we have a DVD Studio Pro forum

February 1, 2008 at 3:58 pmWOuld you prefer to edit your movie in iMovie or Final Cut Pro?
I mean this all in jest. DVD Studio Pro will give you the most flexibility and you don’t have to use those damn templates.

February 1, 2008 at 4:07 pmHi Jeremy
I am editing in FCP. Then i am trying compressor to encode. Eveyone is telling us iDVD is better than DVD studio pro. We are all new to Final Cut Studio 2. We shoot our footage with sony FX1. Then loaded the footage as HD into FCP then edited. So now we want to put our master to SD dvd. Keep the HD for later. Thats what we are doing.Bernard

Who is telling you that?
Compressor is where you will get the most quality out of your DVDs, once it gets to DVD Studio Pro the media is pretty much a pass through. You will have to come up with a combination of encoding settings in Compressor that will suit your liking. There’s much more control there than in iDVD.

Well iDVD will not take pre encoded files from compressor like DVD SP will.

Who is everyone? Most likely they are intimidated by DVD SP.
DVD SP gives you much more control in creating your DVD menus. Besides I would NEVER give a client a DVD that is going to look like one there 10 year old kid just made. Now that does not mean that I never use templates, I created several of my own templates, some based off of a template and then altered greatly, and some built from scratch.
Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!

Bernard,
Everyone who said that should have their heads examined. And, if you’d like the simplist way to make a good quality DVD using DVDSP just follow the instructions below. You can learn Compressor and the rest of DVDSP later…
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
2. Open DVDSP, select the “graphical” tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option “first play”.
5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.
6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the “general tab” in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select “16:9 pan-scan.”
7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
THATS ALL!!!

iDVD is simpler than DVD Studio Pro, but much more limited in what you can do.
If you’re just looking to make a quick DVD, then use iDVD. If you want much more control over the video compression and your DVD Setup / Operation, use DVD Studio Pro.
I’m almost certain there is a tutorial that comes with DVD studio Pro.

As my meathod above will show you, that’s also not a good enough reason to use iDVD…
My method is easy, fast, and the quality is good too…
