HD Downconvert to SD
I have looked all over and can not find a solution to my spacific problem. I have seen some that ar simular and tried some of those solutions. But they didn’t work. I need help,
Here is what is going on. I work for a network and we are just starting to switch to HD but we are broadcasting in SD still. We are capturing our talent and clips in HD on the Codec of DVCPRO HD 1080I60 then I am puting it into a timeline that is setup for the Codec of DVCPRO50. We are needing to have the picture in a 4:3 aspect ratio and not a 16:9. I am seeing interlace issues and the footage is streched. I have tried to distort the clip but this doesn’t seem to work. I have read that many people have suggested on doing the downconvert through the Kona Card but we are not offloading onto tape rather we are making .mts files for our master control to broadcast. Is there a way to downconvert using compressor or in FCP? Please help me.

After looking at the footage closer it ended up not being a downconvert problem but a scaling problem. I am having to scale the image HD image down to put it into an overlay and that is where I was seeing the image not being as clear.

I would strongly advise you not to do a down conversion in this manor, that is if you intend to retain as much of your picture quality as possible…
for this type of workflow I would firstly reccomened a hardware solution like the kona to down convert, as you stated this is not a great help due to your delivery requirments.
To nail this effectively I would need more information re: how important is quality, what kit do you have… on so forth..

HD is Upper Field First. SD is Lower Field First (in NTSC) so that’s why you’re seeing issue when you drop the HD into the SD timeline.
What you need is an AJA Kona board so you can convert the clips to SD during ingest. You can center punch the video so you get your 4:3 aspect ratio.
