Would a RAID speed up my RT performance or is G5 just too slow?
Posted by Samuel Frazier on January 28, 2008 at 7:24 amSorry, this is hard to word. But I’m thinking of adding a 5 drive raid-5 (FirmTek 5-Bay SATA Port Multiplier Enclosure & RocketRAID 2314) and was wondering if this would actually help with my real time performance and render times or if my G5 (single processor dual core 2.3) was the log jam here. Right now I’m using the 2nd bay in the G5 as my video drive. I’m dealing with mostly miniDV projects, but have done some DVC Pro HD & hope to do more and HD varieties in the future.
So, other than having more safety with the raid 5, should I expect any noticeable performance boosts? Thanks ahead of time for any help!Samuel Frazier replied 18 years, 3 months ago 4 Members · 11 Replies -

January 28, 2008 at 7:43 amIt’ll help, just not in every catagory. You can play back more streams of DV and DVCPRO HD. Render times will increase, but not TOO much…processors the main speed factor there. And you’ll have more RT effects open to you.
That is still a pretty solid machine. I am going strong with a Dual 2.0Ghz G5. I have a 5 drive RAid and things are pretty quick.

January 28, 2008 at 9:03 amThanks very much, Shane! One question though, don’t you mean that render times will decrease with the raid? Would think that b/c the drives are faster that rendering would if anything be faster as well.
btw, am a big fan of “Getting Organized…” Just wish I could have gotten the rest of the office to go along with it as well. -

January 28, 2008 at 9:20 amThanks, just wanted to make sure.
Yeah, loved the idea of getting organized with media management but think my gentle suggestion that we incorporate some of the rules (or some kind of general standards!!!) may have rubbed someone the wrong way and lead to my not being put back on the schedule. Perhaps this was a bad move for free lancer. Oh well. -

Not really. Render times are determined by the processor speed, not drive speed. The faster drives will definitely give you more realtime performance. They will only nominally decrease your render times. I would not expect it to be all that much.
For instance I can connect our 500MB/s SAS/SATA array to my Mac Pro Quad 3.0 or a FW800 LaCie RAID. Render times are almost identical regardless of which drive I have connected.

Hmmm….I thought I detected slightly faster render times….compared to rendering on a firewire drive.

slightly faster, but nothing to really say you’re going to get improved render times. Maybe 1 minute faster over a 22 minute show. So yeah, that faster, but nothing I really promote to folks as being faster than a FW drive.
Getting a new system, like a Mac Pro, you would see significant render speed increases. Given the choice of spending money on a RAID or a new Computer to improve render times, I would recommend the computer.

January 29, 2008 at 7:57 amI was just wondering how much effect ram has on rendering times? Would it be better to have say and 8-core with a gig of ram, or a quad core with 4gigs?

very little. RAM has to do with allowing the apps to run faster and to be able to load more information at once. But when it comes to actual rendering, not much.
