  light sabers

  love andrew k. tut on sabers. i had a question though, when the saber goes behind a person, the best way is to mask that part out… or is there some other way. thanks

  Nope, you get in there and tweak it one frame at a time. You can draw the mask in many different places but it’s still a hand-rotoscoping operation. The benefit of rotoscoping by hand is that you can very carefully keep the beam visible under the arms or add edge effects like light wrap to enhance your effects.

  If you shot on a green stage, you can use a copy of the mattes of your actors and selectively turn it on and off to mask the beams as they pass behind them.

  It’s all quite tedious.
