  • CANT IMPORT HDV FOOTAGE… What am i DOing wrong?

Posted by Josh Evans on January 21, 2008 at 6:32 am

I cant import my HDV footage into FCP HD. For some reason, i can always import SD footage fine, but when i try to import HDV from my Sony V1E, final cut tells me that the video deck cannot be found. I have tried fiddling with loads of different settings but nothing seems to work. Can anyone please tell me what i might be doing wrong? Thanks so much for any help.

Here’s a couple of things that work for me. First check the settings to be sure that the output is set for HDV or Auto. I have also found that exiting FCP and relaunching with the V1 turned on will initiate communications.

On the odd occasions I have worked with HDV, sometimes I have found FCP unwilling to open the HDV specific capture window. I think it needs to see the deck/camera and have the correct set-up loaded before you start – you can’t just flip to HDV capture presets and expect it to respond every time.

If you can’t get it to see the deck, try the HDV easy setup, save your project and restart FCP. This may jog it into seeing everything. Make sure you are using the HDV deck control option.

    Hope this helps.

Just had the same problem trying to bring in HDV footage as HDV firewire. I hunted all over the capture window settings and there were no references at all to HDV, only DV, DVC Pro and then all the AJA settings for SD and HD. Then noting the post above I went to the Easy Setups. There I did find a setup for HDV, but it didn’t work. Turns out it was set for PAL instead of NTSC and a few other other subsettings. I corrected everything and it works fine now. I’m just looking for ways of bringing in lots of footage at low resolutions to work with. We have a lot of footage in full HDCAM 1920×1080, and then some HDV. I’m constructing a circuitous workflow that will let me capture 30 hours worth of footage while taking up only a small portion of my raid.

Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.
