I’m trying to figure out a good way to utilize image sequences with FCP. I can get them in just about any fashion as we have After Effects CS3. I get the complex graphics rendered out in targa sequences, but FCP says it doesn’t recognize them. It doesn’t recognize 16bit,24bit, or 32bit targas. I can save out a made from scratch targa in photoshop and FCP will recognize that. I have found that tiff and psd sequences will work though.
It’s frustrating that FCP only understands targas from photoshop and not AE. Aren’t Targas one of the most universally accepted formats???

Has anybody else run into this problem and do you have any advice?

Would turning the image sequence into a quicktime work for what you’re trying to do?

I don’t have a lot of experiences with image sequences in FCP but I have used Quicktime Pro to open an image sequence and save it as a Quicktime file. You can do this from Quicktime Pro with the Open > Image Sequence command.

it sounds like it might, but does that apply any compression to the file though? And if it doesn’t, is it pretty processor intensive, I mean does it take awhile?

I’m not too sure if you can open the image sequence and save without a recompression – I know you sure you can save to the format of your choice. I think it’s something worth trying at least to see if it works.

I always preferred to use Targas in every editing and compositing program I have ever used until I started using FCP. FCP and targas don’t get along well. FCP doesn’t even recognize the alpha channel in 32 bit TGA files. I have found FCP loves PNG formatted files and will recognize the alphas “transparently” (pun intended) with this format.

do you mean png image sequence or a quicktime movie encoded with the png codec? I have never tried the PNG codec. Maybe I’ll give it a shot. Is it a pretty universal codec?
