I’m considering hiring a vid in another city to shoot for me on an HD/HDV camera like the V1U or Z1, using MiniDV tapes. The only MiniDV machine I have is a Canon XL1S. Will the XL1 read the MiniDV tapes from the HD/HDV camcorder so I can do my own capturing, or do I need to have a V1/Z1/HDV deck here from which to capture?

A DV deck will not playback HDV tapes. If you shoot with a Sony camera, only a SONY HDV deck will play back that footage…or Sony HDV camera.

I think those HDV cameras can record DV as well as HDV onto mini DV cassettes. Your XL1 is mini DV only so, if that is your only means to capture with, you will need to be provided with mini DV footage only. Even with DV footage sony and canon can have issues.

If you want the project on HDV then you will need to rent a camera or deck to input the footage like Shane said.

Thanks Guys – it’s as I expected. Probably what I’ll do then is hire the vid to shoot and digitize, then send the files to me for editing.

    I appreciate your help.
