In Final Cut, I’m constantly working on multiple episodes of shows that already generally have a lot of graphics in place. My preferred way of applying specific transitions to video clips that aren’t using my default cross dissolve is to option+click+drag from a nearby clip that is using the same transition and copy it over.

For some time now on and off I’ve noticed that sometimes this works, and sometimes it doesn’t allow you to do this. I think I’ve isolated the problem – when you originally apply a transition from the Video Transitions folder of the Effects browser it is opt+click+drag copyable (I know that’s a weird phrase). If you have favorited the transition and apply the transition from your favorites folder then you can not opt+click+drag to another clip to copy the transition.

This annoyed the heck out of me for so long, but when I finally tried to look into the problem I realized what the causes were. Has anyone else experienced this? I’d love it if there was a way to be able to use this method of copying transitions when they were originally applied from the favorites folder… but I guess in the end it’s really no big deal I just have to make sure I keep tabs on where I originally apply the transition from.

do you mean apply as in make default transition ie command + T ?

or apply as in drag and drop from favorites to timeline?

one thing i was experinceing was that i would command + T a default 20 frame dissolve and it would apply with a 1 frame duration. However i dont remeber if it was a ‘favorite” transition or one from the effects list

also, does it have to be the favorites folder under effects tab? One thing i have tried to get in the habit of is making a favorite effects folder in my project, so if i have to trash prefs, i dont lose those custom 22 frame dissolves that my clients HAVE to have! 🙂

No I’m not talking about CMD+T or dragging and dropping from the timeline. I’m talking about option+clicking on a transition that is already on the timeline somewhere and dragging it to another clip which is essentially making a copy of that transition.

The problem is that depending on where you dragged your transition from in the original instance (the favorites folder or the transitions folder in the effects browser) you’ll either be able to do it or not.

I too like to use the option-drag method of adding transitions and have had the same thing happen to me. I like to option drag audio transitions a lot for blending nat sound clips under the video. I usually keep a few “standard” lengths of the audio transition in my favorites folder. I’ve had instances where, after dragging the effect from the favorites folder onto a track and then using that same effect by option dragging it from one spot in the time to another, the duration of the transition will change, usually to a single frame duration. Once the original favorites effect gets “corrupted” in this manner, all subsequent uses of the effect will result in the same problem. I don’t know why or how the favorite is getting corrupted, but a simple workaround is to just delete it(the favorite) and make a new transition and drag it back in the the favorites folder. It will then work normally when option-dragging it later. I’ve had it happen a few times but haven’t been able to reproduce what causes it to go bad. I’ve just learned to work around it. :\

    Tom and Paul

FWIW i never drag transitions from the browser to the timeline unless its a unique one, like a wipe. I always use a keyboard shortcut for default transition.

But i also copy drag transitions along the timeline, especailly if they are specific duration wipes and so on (often used to bring on graphics and lower thirds) I have seen this shortening effect duration from whatever it was to one frame, and if i double clicked on the transition and opened it in the viewer, or even tried to drag it out, i could not change the duration.

I thought it was one of those corrupt preference file issues, I remeber fixing it by copying and pasting the whole clip, transsitions and all, then just replacing the content of the clip. probably not the answert you are looking for, but it helped me

    more to come

    Hi again

murphys law: i cant get it to happen. right now no matter where i drag my transition from, when i copy drag it along the timeline it copys correctly

maybe it is another of those corrupt preference issues. Try trashing your prefs and see if it works better

It’s not a preferences problem, the “frankenstein” 1 frame transition (that can’t be modified) happens in this situation:

    – You have a transition on the timeline with centre alignment.
    – You copy (either by option-dragging or Cmd-C/Cmd-V) this transition to an edit which has zero frames available as a handle on the incoming clip.
    – FCP resizes the transition to 1 frame with ‘starting at’ alignment

If the source transition is aligned to start or end then the problem doesn’t occur.
