sorenson 3 compression vanished
Posted by Dave Fraser on January 16, 2008 at 9:57 amHello,
Something really strange has happened. I went to export my finished video from Final Cut this morning as a Sorenson 3, but noticed, that that compression setting had disappeared from my conversion list. Sorenson 3 also doesn’t appear in compressor either.
I’ve restarted my machine, I’ve also trashed preferences and Sorenson 3 is still missing.
Does anyone know why this is? and how I get it back? Thanks in advance

January 16, 2008 at 4:20 pmI have no idea how to correct it.
This was e-mailed to me this morning:
QuickTime 7.4
QuickTimeCVE-ID: CVE-2008-0031
Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.9 or later, Mac OS X v10.5 or later, Windows Vista, XP SP2
Impact: Viewing a maliciously crafted movie file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution
Description: A memory corruption issue exists in QuickTime’s handling of Sorenson 3 video files. This may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of Sorenson 3 video files. Credit to Joe Schottman of Virginia Tech for reporting this issue.

January 16, 2008 at 6:35 pmEveryone stop freaking out. In Apple’s infinite wisdom, they attempted to pare down the number of codecs listed and culling the older codecs. BUT, they are all still there. Go to QuickTime preferences, to the Advanced tab and click Show Legacy Codecs. Considering the gamma issues of H.264, they have some nerve relegating Sorenson to a legacy format.

February 13, 2008 at 2:17 pmI have this same problem, have QT 7.4, but there is no “advanced” tab for me in QT preferences. There is “General”, “Full Screen”, and “Recording”.
Any ideas?

February 15, 2008 at 6:51 pmThat’s because in the QUICKTIME PLAYER menu you have 2 PREFERENCES. One it’s a plain PREFERENCES option and the other one says QUICK TIME PREFERENCES.
You need to click on that QUICK TIME PREFERENCES option and there you’ll see that the last TAB is ADVANCED where you can activate the SHOW LEGACY ENCODERS check box.
