    Hi everybody!

    I have an animation in an HDTV composition ready to go. I need to export it into Final Cut Pro to make some editing and soundtrack synching.

    Encoding politics always drags me down. Always.

    What is the final product for viewing? HDCAM tape? 1080? 720p DVCPROHD?
    What are you exporting out of FCP?
    Who is getting whatever you’re exporting out of FCP?
    What do they want from you?

    At present time normal DVD, but I want to have an HD master for ‘the future’ and I also plan to make HD(or blueray)-DVDs as soon as I can.

    Hopefully some kind of HDTV-master.

    Museums/galleries/festivals/TV.

    _______What do they want from you?
    Nothing in particular, also usually DVDs and various tape formats. I want to have the finest resolution possible, at least for the master archived on hard-drive. The nature of the animation is extremely graphic and suffers from any kind encoding. The animation works are usually presented in galleries with real large-scale drawings next to them. The animations and the drawings shares the style. Obviously the resolution of the videos always look poor next to the drawings. As soon as HD-DVDs are widely available, I want to present my works with this format.

    Sounds like Animation codec is your best bet, or if you’ve got the space do it totally uncompressed.

    Yow! No need for uncompressed, go Animation. The difference is negligible, if that.

    …. and this is for archiving, not playback, you realize. Remember, Blu-ray (and HD-DVD) will be compressed — it has to be, to play from a removeable single disk. And when it comes to playback compression, you’d better go for the highest data rate possible for highest quality, but be prepared: there will be quality loss.

    If you want highest quality, set up a computer with hard drive or RAID to play the movie back in the museum.

    What would be the most similar codec to QT’s Animation for AVI? I would use QT movs but a couple of our qorkstations won’t read them, so I need to stay AVI or TGA sequences.

    I don’t think that any R&D has been spent on the high-data-rate end for AVI since Indeo back in the nineties — all the R&D seems to be aimed at low-data-rate web playback.

    For AVI, as far as I know, you have uncompressed, or some flavour of hardware codec such as the Matrox Digisuite or Pinnacle M-JPEG codecs, which may be obsolete. I think that the idea is to get some kind of board that works with premiere, and use that codec. Trouble is, everybody in the workflow might need the board.

    Personally, for delivery to Windows workstations, I’d render to TGA sequence then Zip the files together to get some kind of compression for storage or transport. If there’s a lot of clean space in the frame, I’ve found that the files compress rather well that way.

    Googling “lossless” and “avi” might lead to something. Anybody else?

    if you plan on editing in FCP in HD, then you better have some real fast drives.
    if not, then you could render out 2 passes. id do one to dvcproHD and a second can be 2 animation ( though i would use the decklink codec since i have a blackmagic card).

    you can then offline your cut in FCP in realtime making whatever editing you need to do. then relink the clips to your “uncompressed” render for final output.
