View Timecode while Batch Capturing
My playback machine is in a different room than my Final Cut 6 system. When batch capturing pre-logged scenes I’d like to be able to see the timecode display running in real time in a separate window. This is just for my confort level reference while batch capturing. I’m not talking about the window actually being recorded, (I don’t want a window dub).
Is there a way to do this?

Not within FCP. You can easily turn on the TC Display on your deck and view it on a monitor. Just be sure it’s not turned on the same feed as your capture.

Heh heh…. I asked a Apple engineer about this once…. they looked at me like I was an alien.
There’s no way to do it. Except maybe a webcam in the machine room looking at the deck display.

Thanks Walter, I did already think of this, turning on the tc window and viewing in another monitor, but I was optimistically hopefully there was something more elegant withing FCP.

The only thing more elegant is Big Time from Digital Heaven, but that does NOT work during Capture. Only when editing. But it is great to have if you’re working with clients in the room with you. It’s a nice big TC display you can put anywhere on the screen.

Horita (probably someone else, too) makes boxes that display the TC from your RS-422 port or from a BNC port that outputs LTC. You can then display the TC on a monitor.

With interfaces like the AJA IOHD including timecode in and out, hopefully we see progress on the FCP side of things in the future.

FCP sems to make such a big deal at capture time. My old FAST 601 – years ago – displayed TC, clip capture progress, batch capture progress, live audio levels, HDD space availabilty and a SMOOTH video display simultaneously.
I was very dissapointed with this when I first moved over to FCP.

I really appreciate you all chiming in on this. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who doesn’t understand why this is not part of FCP. I had already tried a few of the things suggested and they work, but I was hoping there was actually something within FCP itself. Maybe someday.
