  HDV dropout in capture — any way to make so FCP doesn’t stop but captures dropout too?

  Am playing back from an HDV tape of a performance. About 20 minutes in there’s a dropout. As FCP captures, it comes to that point and stops the capture, giving me a stream error. I can go past the dropout and start capturing, but is there a way to get it so FCP doesn’t stop but just gives me whatever the nasty dropout looks like, so I don’t lose so much of the head where it continues?

  Problem is the hole is a lot bigger than just the dropout because FCP stops and then I have to cue up after the dropout to capture the rest, and it’s right in the middle of a really important scene where I’d like to keep as much as possible.

  Is there a way to get FCP to ignore timecode drops and dropouts? I have unchecked the box that says “Abort capture on dropped frame” and yet it still does that. I also have it checked for “on timecode break, warn after capture.” So I don’t understand why it keeps stopping. Grr…this tape has multiple dropouts for some reason (was a rental while mine was in the shop…).

  The only way is to try playing out to another tape deck and make a tape to tape dub with continous timecode.

  If this is an important moment you need from this tape I would suggest trying a method that you may need a post house to help you with depending on the equipment you have. If you have an HDV device that has an HDMI output and a Black Magic Intensity card then you can most likely recover the image that has this dropout. I know Sony HDV devices equipped with HDMI use an error correction control that should interpolate or at least guess at what the image should be. There is not an error correction when using firewire.

  Thanks guys. My wife suggested the easiest solution — I shot various performances of this show, and am just stealing another angle from another show and cut it in, works fine. Appreciate the info.

  I’ve done this with DV – and all you had to do is set the device control to “non controllable device”. Then just hit play on your camcorder and do a capture now. Using this method FCP would capture everything you were seeing on the tape, including dropouts.

  Now, I’m not sure if this is impossible with HDV because it’s an interframe codec… but I think it’s work a shot.
