Activity Forums Adobe After Effects Ram Usage

    Hi Guys and Girls!
I was wondering why AE doesn’t use all the RAM I’ve got on my system whilst rendering. I’ve got 3.5 GB RAM on my G5 but whilst rendering with AE ist only shows ‘xy% of 2047 MB used. What’s up with the other 1500 MB? Are they on holiday?

On my Powerbook AE uses all the 5hundredandsomething RAM that’s actually there.

Cheers and thanks for the help!

Any 32-bit application can only address a maximum of 2 GB of memory. Pretty well documented limitation.

A ‘solution’ is to use something like Nucleo or Nucleo pro, which will launch multiple instances of AE during previewing or rendering.

Also, if you use a 64-bit OS like Windows XP64 AE can use 4GB of RAM, might not be any use on a Mac, but if you can boot Windows on there it might be useful with a PC copy of the app..

AE CS3 will use up to 3.5GB for each process on Mac OS X, and 4GB per process on Win64. If you have a lot of RAM, it will take advatange of it all…
