i have a lacie big disk extreme hard drive. I’ve used it for two days with no problems via firewire 800. on the 3rd day I powered it on and my mac will not recognize it (no icon on desktop). However, it powers off when i shut my computer down so it seems to be recognizing the drive just not letting me access it. It works fine with firewire 400 and USB.

what seems to be the problem? I’ve tried everything i can think of. Thanks so much for the help.

Open disk utility and see if it shows up in there, and if it will let you force mount it.

it isn’t in the disk utility.

Check your cables, and I would even test the drive on a different computer, that would tell you if the drive itself is bad.

I have a firewire 800 to 400 cable so i connect the drive using both ends. It reads it fine connecting 800 to the drive and 400 to the computer but not the other way around so I guess its my firewire 800 port on the mac.

I wonder how much trouble that will be to fix.

    thanks again, zane.

You should also try connecting it to another computer just to check. It could be the 800 to 800 cable.

From your original post it sounds like you have only had the drive a few days, so I would return it.
