  LiveType yea or nay?

  I’ve been using Photoshop, Boris 3d Text, and After Effects for graphics in FCP, mainly slightly or non-animated lower thirds, credit sequences, & text builds.

  All three have their limitations. I’ve been considering buying a DVD to help me learn LiveType — is that app worth the time to get up to speed with it, or am I better off with what I’m doing?

  I’m a bit frustrated with Photoshop in a FCP timeline, especially the need to render with every change.

  Just use the preset templates and you are good to go. Don’t forget Motion.

  Bob,

  Live type has a very shallow learning curve for a guy like you with AE talent… Its took me about 5-minutes. There is an Apple tutorial and thats all you need. In fact, there even a Cow Forum dedicated to LiveType at https://forums.creativecow.net/viewforum/73

  Yes, LT is really easy, 5 minutes, 10 tops to get it going.

  Unless you have prejudices against trying to unlearn every other keyframing paradigm you’ve ever had to learn.
  I like LT for lots of things and it’s fun. But tweaking the effects will tax your patience so just stick with the easy stuff.

  You should also know that LiveType has terrible typography tools. If you are a stickler for kerning pairs, leading precision, and cool PS layer effects, expect to lower your expectations.

  Here’s another tip: LT defaults to active drop shadows. Turn them off, it increases the performance exponentially. Put your shadows into your show in your editor.
