Hello, there is nothing in the manual on how to do this – does anyone here know how to view a clip or sequence frame by frame. I want to do this for some fine editing. Any ideas I am desperate? Many thanks.

Sure there is. Maybe you just don’t know what to look for so try searching the index in the manuals or the online help for some of these:
    Trimming.
    Scrubbing.
    Jogging.
    Stepping.

    try these keys

    { (is shift [)
trim back 5 or more frames

    [
    trim back 1 frame

    } (is shift ])
trim forward 5 or more frames

    ]
    trim forward 1 frames

    u
    changes from ripple to roll

    v
selects the closest edit point (uses track auto select try selecting with option key for just that track)

    arrow left
    move playhead back 1 frame

    shift arrow left
    move playhead back 10 frames

    arrow right
    move playhead forward 1 frame

    shift arrow right
    move playhead forward 10 frames

    \
    play around edit

this is the way to use the trim edit functions without using the trim edit window

This same question was posted on other FCP forums. Seems the OP was asking about the filmstrip display in the timeline.
