  • timeline plays then just stops

Posted by Ron Rothstein on December 19, 2007 at 10:55 pm

    I have a G5 powermac and work in FCP6.

I just started having a problem where when I hit play on the timeline the thing will play for a while and then all of a sudden, like a runner who is out of breath and stops running, will just stop playing as if the machine is fatigued.

The message pops up that: “One or more frames were dropped during playback. If this frequently occurs, try

    – Turning off Unlimited RT (which I never had on to begin with)
Lower my compression data rate ( Can anybody tell me how?)
Close open sequences (which I did)
Lowering the preference for real-time audio tracks (How?)
-Increase the speed of my system and/or disk drives and/or network connection (How do you increase the speed of the system)

Also, it adds in red colored ink….

RT Extreme detrermined that it was caused by “slow discs” and that I should try:
-Increasing the speed of my disks (How does one do that?)
-Decreasing the number or RT layers (I did)
-Limiting my RT bandwidth in User Preferences (To what)

It’s strange but this just started happening for no apparent reason. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Ron

WHere is your media located? On what kind of disk? What else is attached to your machine?

It sounds possibly like your drive(s) are not fast enough to keep up with the type of video you are trying to play back. What kind of external drives are you running on your machine? You’re not running your media from your system drive, right?
Depending on the type of video you are attempting to playback, you may need to use faster disks (Firewire 800’s) or a RAID made up of several disks all working together. These could be anything from stripped Firewire disks, to SATA disks and up to SCSI or fiber channel systems.
The best way to “speed up” your drives is to use several of them at the same time, working together to play out your video.
You might also try to do a “mixdown” on your audio tracks before playing it back to tape. This will often solve the dropped frames problem on some systems.

The media is located on La Cie 1 terabyte disk and on a Rockstor 500 gig external disk and I am using the firewire 400 cable in some case going through a hub which I am using but I also try it directly into the machine and still have this intermittent problem. I only have four audio tracks and mostly it is just dialogue on one track.

This seems to be a new development. My memory is 2.5 gigs. Do I need more of this?

It seems to me your disks just aren’t keeping up. You need to either consolidate your disks and remove them from the hub. How full are they?

I also experienced the same problem that BigRon has described, once upgrading to FCP6. I never got this error in the past under the 5.xx version. I playback umcompressed at 20,3MB/sec with no issues. Now it won’t play back unless I turn off the Canvas window. Under FCP 6, it only plays from the timeline to my NTSC monitor. Prior to the upgrade to 6, it played just fine in the Canvas window and the NTSC.

I also received the same error message, BigRon listed in his original post. Is there anyone out there with an answer why now under FCP 6 it no longer works. Before I ditch FCP6 and go back to 5.1.4

I also use a G5 Dual Processor with 8GB RAM and 3TB of disk space
