December 19, 2007 at 1:36 pmHDs died like that. Don’t blame FC.
What you need to think is that if you have something that you must recover from the HD.

December 19, 2007 at 2:16 pmYou might want to try going into the energy manager preference panel and make sure that it is set to “never” on both of the choices and also uncheck the “Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible” box.
Also make sure that all of your drivers are up to date as well.

Sorry I read your post too fast. I thought that your HD was death.
However, when a HD fall sleep because you have the preferences to do so, the HD never should get unmounted. That points a mayor malfunction of the HD (the power source?) but not of your computer.
i have been always working with small external FW discs and in my experience (sorry) when a HD do like that it have very little life expectancy.
This is the normal end of this kind of discs. And this an happen even with quite new Hds.
i have a 80Gb LaCie working 4 years, while another Lacie Porche and a Maxstore died after just few moths of use.

have you dumped your preferences for FCP?
have you done a repair disk via Disk Utilities on the external HD and put in your original install disk to do a repair disk to your Start Up drive and then repair your permissions after all that?
try zapping your PRAM? check your other ram.
reinstall FCPro….
i dont edit with HD footage yet but have many external hdrives and have never had one unmount while I was editing. I have also had Hdrives die on me and none have gone that way either.
if you could find someone else to try and edit your footage on that exact Hdrive on a different editing suite that would narrow down the problems as well…..
hope this helps….

The data rate of the HDV is the same than the one of the DV, 25Mbps. That’s quite little for FW800.
You said that other HDs have got unmounted too while editing. The only think I can think about is giving you the problem, is the FireWire conexion.

December 20, 2007 at 3:54 pmi think i found the solution. after some more testing i figured that it can only
be the firewire ports itself. so will have to send it in for repair 🙁thanks to everyone who commented and helped!
cheerz
