Restoring media from tape
Hi All,
The company I currently work for previously owned Avid and changed to Final Cut a couple of years ago. We have recently had some discussions about backing-up etc. and we have come to a stumbling block in restoring media from the tapes. On the AVID, if media went offline or needed to be reconnected then they cut put a tape into the VTR and from the logging details made in digitisation the AVID would automatically search and re-capture the footage. Now my understanding of this was that unfortunately Final Cut did not have this option. It had extensive logging notes available i.e. reel numbers etc. but it would not automatically associate a tape with a reel number or automatically find an re-capture the footage.
Has anyone had this problem or can inform me if this is possible using Final Cut. To summarise, my basic question is can Final Cut re-compose media files automatically or do you have to manually re-capture it?

simply highlight the offline clips in your FCP Browser and select Batch Capture from the drop down menus. Then choose your options and away you go..

It certainly do just what you described-it’s the basis for log & capture in FCP.
You can take media offline today and go back and redigitize at any time. As long as your footage has timecode and you put the proper reels into your machine, it will go back and find all of your original clips and redigitize them and you’re off and running just like the original project.
It might be a good idea to review the Media Manager and Log & Capture sections of your manual for more details. Whoever gave you this “advice” is dead wrong.
