Project Compatibility with Studio 2 upgrade..
I should be receiving my Final Cut Studio upgrade in the mail today. I have a few projects that I am working on right now. Is it going to be a problem to install the update? Will my projects be okay? I am not running Leopard yet. I just don’t want to upgrade the Suite and lose the ability to complete my current projects.

YOur current projects will work. FCP will update them to the new version, so if I were you, I’d duplicate them first, just so you have OLDER versions just in case.
AND CLONE YOUR SYSTEM DRIVE FIRST! Must must must must must must must MUST! If the install for whatever reason doesn’t work, or you have issues galore, you can simply reclone BACK your working system and version of FCP, and still have your old projects, and continue working from there.
Before you upgrade…clone. That has to be a mantra.

In case Shane’s message was unclear, let me reiterate, CONE YOU SYSTEM DRIVE FIRST!!!
In all seriousness, if you get in the habit of cloning, you will realize that all of these questions and worries simply go away. You will never live in fear. There will be nothing you can do to your system from which you can’t recover. Its like being bulletproof or invulnerable, and even kyrptonite won’t hurt you. Its a nice feeling…

It might not be okay. It depends on your timeline and what’s going on.
It’d be best if you finish these in 5 and start all new projects in 6. Get yourself a new boot drive, reload the system on it, and install 6.

well, I actually need 6 to finish the project. There is some keying i need to do, and I got the Boris FX package for FCP6. It isn’t compatible with 5, and I need some of the chroma key/choke filters…

In that case, push forward. For the most part your projects will probably be okay. I might suggest to export an XML of the entire V5 project and reimport and relink in FCP6.
