XDCam HD captured as DVCPro HD cueing issue
I’m capturing footage from an XDCam HD deck via HD-SDI as DCVPro HD files rather than just importing the files via Firewire. The deck behaves just like a VTR. The problem I’m wondering about is cueing and preroll on the disk. When I go to capture a batch list, the deck, again, behaves just like a VTR, cueing through all of the footage to find the next scene. Is there a way to get the deck to simply jump to the next scene to be captured rather than having it shuttle through all of the shots in between? It is a disc-based system after all. When I use the deck, in the same manner, on one of the Avid systems, it will do just that-jump to the next scene without shuttling through the footage between. The Avids are pushing 5 years old, but they seem to handle capture from the disc-based deck better than FCP does.
Something set wrong somewhere in FCP?

I’ve had the same issues when I’ve captured down converted hd directly from my 350 into FCP – not sure whether I’ve tried it in FCS2 yet though.
It amazed me that it seems to take an age to ‘spool’ along the disk! I assumed it was an apple firewire protocol thing.

Nope, not Firewire.
When I capture on the Avid, when it batch digitizes,, it will jump from the end of one clip to the beginning of the next one and start to capture right away. When capturing with FCP, it acts just like its hooked up to a traditional VTR. It will shuttle through the disc until it gets to the next clip, park at the preroll point and then start to capture
I can’t imagine that this is the only way that I can capture through the HD-SDI cables. When importing through Firewire, it’s very fast and generally works the way it is supposed to. I’m just wondering why it works correctly on our old Avid Symphonys but not in FCP. There must be a “gotcha” involved somewhere.
