  I`m working on Interview/Documentary project and I`ll be requesting historical footage (news reel)any time soon from the state library. Is any format in particular I should be requesting, or I shouldn`t worry to much keeping into consideration that FCP 2 can work with multiple formats?

  Txs in advance for any suggestions.

  Think about the easiest way to capture it keeping the higher possible quality.

  Request the footage on the same format you plan to shoot / edit in.

  Be happy they have anything to give you and use clean and serviced machines to play it back so you don’t a) ruin the only copy around and/or b) degrade an already ancient source. You’re going to get lots of weird source material. Save yourself some work later on and once you’ve got bits captured, back them up to disk or tape and move them offsite just in case.

  Hi
  The newsreel footage is hopefully coming from the original 35mm.
  If it has recently telecined, to DigiBeta or Betacam SP tape, then a dub off that is the best possible source.
  If it was telecined a long time ago, originally onto 2″ or 1″ videotape, or worst of all 3/4″ U-matic, then you will get a vastly improved results with a new telecine from the archived film, as long as it hasn’t degraded.

  Even if it was originally telecined to a high standard, beware taking a copy off the edited master if that was on-line edited on an Avid system in the late 1990s/early 2000s, as I find there to be a significant loss of quality from such masters, and the original telecined Beta SP tape will usually be better.

  Hi Antonio,
  As Pul says, would be great (and very expensive too) if you could get the old films directly from the telecine.
  What you can get will depends mostly of your supplier. If you get your archives from a TV station normally you will get Betacam unless is something from the last few years . In the late 70’s they put all the films in 1’B and 1’C tapes. With the arrival of the Betacam all those 1′ where transfered to Betacam. Less space needed to stock and easier to manage.
  If you are looking for news from the last 15 years or so probably you will get Betacam and DVCpro25/DVcam or so. Last year I used some australian stuff of Vietnam war (Shot in16mm and released free from the Australian government) copied in Betacam tapes.
  Try to get the video in the same format that they have it so if is not digital, you control the digitalization. If possible don’t let then do it.
