  OMF Conundrum

  I have a 1hr 30min feature I’m color correcting a few select shots on and doing pro tools sweetening in some other sections.

  I just discovered today that OMF export IGNORES in and out points in final cut. The editor of the feature has the entire
  film as 1 long sequence, which I realize can be dangerous.

  So I have 2 options as i see it.

  1. Export 30 minutes at a time for 3 large segments.

  2. Export only the segments we’re sweetening to keep
  it as painless as possible.

  I’m leaning to #2 bug giving my audio engineer both options for thursdays session.

  What would you do?

  Well, ONLY export the parts you are done editing…yeah, that is a NO brainer. But I have always broken the export up into smaller segements. For FILM, you have REELS, which are 22 min in length. TV we have ACTS, which range from 5 min to 12 min….so I can do TWO at a time. Or if you have good breaking points at 30 min, do that.

  Put right in the beginning and in the end of each track a bit of tone (one frame is enough). Like that FC knows where all the tracks starts and ends. Then you take then away in ProTools. This works. You just need to be careful with the OMF size.
