    Please Help.

I just finished erase and installing OS X 10.4 which means that I had to reinstall FCP 5.1. After the installation, I can run FCP and can import my old clips, but when I try to open my previous files (sequence) I get the message “General Error (41). How can I resolve this because I have put in too many hours in the previous projects.

    Thanks.

It sounds like that project file is corrupt. Check your Autosave Vault and try opening the last auto save.

Thanks for your help. I have tried that already and it does not work. I’m sure that the files where not corrupted at all. But I have 2 thoughts, please correct me if I’m wrong.

    1. When I reinstalled FCP5.1, I did not install all the extra package as I did before due to space. Thins like Motion was not installed because I did not use that. However, I can open my projects from FCP4.5 without any problem.

    2. Could it be that since my 1st installation of FCP5.1 and various software updates, a new version of FCP5.1 may have been automatically installed. Because of this, I have tried to do a software update after this last installation, but the problem is still there.

    Thanks

Newer versions of FCP can open projects from earlier versions of FCP, but never the other way round … if you try to open a project saved with a newer version of FCP than the one you are using then you’ll get this General Error (41)

You need to run the software updates on your system to bring your FCP 5.1 installation back up to 5.1.4 (where you likely were before the reinstall) then try to open those projects again

    See if that helps

Wow, funny thing, this post. I’ve been using FCP for more than a few years and have never seen “general Error 41″… until just yesterday!

I copied a graphic from one sequence, pasted to another, then copied the pasted graphic using i think alt+drag (as I realized needed 2 copies of the graphic) I grabbed the 2nd copy, dragged it over a piece of video, once i released the mouse button I got General Error 41. Tried it a couple more times always with the same result. I then grabbed the first copy and it dropped fine over the same piece of video. Then took the problem gfx and dropped it without issue over a different piece of video…

(sequence was DV-NTSC, gfx was Animation Codec, on a mac pro 2.66, 4gig, 1900XT, kona LHe, running 6.02 on 10.4.11)

Any hu.. it had nothing to do with the ver. of FCP that was being used.. so I don’t think General Error 41 is isolated to version incompatibilities.
