    Hi all,

I’m working a new system that is being upgraded from a blackmagic multibridge to an Aja Kona System. It needs to do all flavors of video including component and composite I/O and HD I/O. I’m not interested in the new HD box. I want to stick with the Kona 3x card. In this configuration would I just add an the Io or the Io LD for the analog I/O’s? or should I use one or a combination of the converters?

    Thanks

If you don’t need to upconvert anything, then the Io LA will be all you need to add to the Kona.

If you want to use the Kona to upconvert the standard def material, then it needs to come in over the SDI on the Kona. You could use a full size Io as an A to D converter for this. Or you can get an AJA D10AD or HD10AVA that will convert component, S-VHS and composite to SDI.

    Look them up here: https://www.aja.com/html/products_converters_mc.html

It might also be possible to use your Multibridge as a converter. And ADS now has a mini converter for this, as well: https://www.adstech.com/pyroav_com/products/PVC-930/products_details.asp

Io LA gives you Analog I/O in SD. Composite, Component, S-Video.

AJA HD10AVA gives you Component and 4 channels of audio conversion to an SDI stream with embedded audio. SD and HD.

We run both of these options using the HD10AVA for our HDV decks to connect directly to the Kona 3. We have the Io LA in case we ever need to capture from our UVW-1800, but we generally capture Beta from our J3/902 which has SDI output.

Sorry, I gave the wrong URL & model for the ADS Pyro: https://www.adstech.com/pyroav_com/products/PVC-940/products_details.asp

I am about to buy a Kona 3 card for the Octocore-based HD edit system I am configuring. But in order to be able to capture Beta-SP material from my UVW 1800, I must also buy the Io LA, right? And I take it that will also give me machine control of the 1800 through FCP?

I understand that we live in a digital world — and moreso every day. But I can say from experience that there’s still a heck of a lot of work out there that requires analog capability and I think there will be for some time to come. I wish AJA would build a Kona 3+ card that also provides analog capture, instead of requiring additional, outboard hardware. Anyone here know of any plans for that?

Honestly, If you don’t already own an Io, I’d go with the HD10AVA instead. This gives you the option to upconvert the beta to 720 or 1080 when you need to. Also, the HD10AVA will allow you to capture HD analog component from HDV cameras & decks. An Io LA will not give you these options. With the HD10AVA, your RS-422 control would be via the Kona.

If you don’t need to use uncompressed HD, consider an Io HD instead of a Kona. It already has the analog component inputs, and will do up- & cross-conversions to either 720 or 1080. It still gives you the option for uncompressed SD. In this scenario, your deck control is via an RS-422 port on the Io.

Thanks, Arnie. Sounds like good advice on the HD10AVA. I will stick with my plans for the Kona, though, since I want to be ready for uncompressed HD.

    Cheers,

My pleasure. I think you’ll have the most flexibility with this combo.
