Do anybody know what is the ” Field reordering” option for in the H264?
Is just a shift in the field order?
if so, why is set by default?

    hey Rafael

I’d assume it simply reverses the existing field order (goodness knows i see enough footage that has been encoded with the wrong field order)

anyhoo, heres a link to way more than any sane person needs to know about H264, and goodness knows it made no sense to me!:

have you tried just toggling it on/off and analysing the difference?

    cheers
    Andy

    Hi Andy,
I’m just using the H264 to make some movies for a web site. However I’m deinterlacing first in FC. If I use the Frame control in Compressor takes too long.
I will make a test to se what happens tweaking the “Field reorder’ and I’ll let you know.
The link about the H264 ot missed. But don’t worry about. If for you (that know the insides of FC and QT) doesn’t make much sense, I’m sure I won’t understand a word.
    Cheers,
    Rafael
PS: I’ve ordered a SDCAM EX. Soon I’ll need your advice.

    Hey Rafael,

Just yesterday I noticed the field ordering with H264 for the first time. I was making a half-sized movie from a 720p timeline all made from stills, so there was no footage to screw up field order, but I noticed in the QT settings that frame reordering was set by default, and I couldn’t find a way to turn it off. But my movie looked fine, so go figure…

    Have a wonderful day.

    Hi Chris,
How did you export the h264?
Until now I been able to uncheck the Reordering when exporting from FC via QT and Compressor. Also using QT or Compressor alone it’s works for me.
Small format T movies can not be interlaced, so is confusing that they keep this option checked in a Web preset.
I will make a test sing interlaced SD footage and i will see what happens when that option is checked or unchecked.
They want a .wmv and a QT7 for the website. The most of the QT7 (H64 320×240) the picture looks great but the subtitles (on the lower black of the letterbox) looks quite dirty. The picture of the .wmv is worst, but te subtitles are absolutely clean.

    Rafael,

I exported from FCP using QT conversion, normally I would export an uncompressed movie and compress it in Episode or QT, but I was in a hurry. Never saw that field reordering before.

    Have a wonderful day.

Hey all, that’s not FIELD reordering, it’s FRAME reordering and it has to do with how h264 is compressed. I only understand it a little bit, but basically h264 reorders frames so that it is totally efficient in it’s encode/decode. Instead of me butchering the concept I’ll let apple explain it from this page:

    Well, that’s informative, thanks.

frame reordering to improve compression efficiency, damn they’re fiendishly clever buggers!
    thanks for the clarification Jeremy

Thanks for the info Jeremy, that’s very interesting. And sorry for the mistake Frame/Field.
I guess that is something like in the Open GOPs MPG2, that allow to use the “I” frames of the previous and next GOP for a better encoding.
    So Frame Reordering always ON.

[rafalaos] “And sorry for the mistake Frame/Field. “

You better be. I will hold it against you from now until the end of time.

Yep, something to that effect. Weird stuff if you ask me, but then again so is everything else we chat about on this forum.
