Crucial or OWC?
Posted by Lee Mceachern on November 29, 2007 at 5:24 pmI’ve seen both Crucial and OWC recommended here as sources for memory. I’m about to buy 8 gigs of RAM in 2-gig modules for a Mac Pro Octocore. Crucial charges $720; OWC charges $600. Quite a price difference.
For those of you who know both companies, is there any reason to pay the higher price at Crucial? I’ve read here that Crucial is a memory supplier to Apple. That’s comforting, but OWC also touts that they are “Apple Certified” by Netlist, whatever that means.
Any educated thoughts appreciated.

November 29, 2007 at 5:50 pmYou’ll have a guarantee either way. I buy lots of drives from OWC and I like the company. If it were me, I’d still buy from Crucial, but that might be because I’ve never had a problem with it and that price has always been reasonable. When you’re buying 8GB of RAM, $120 doesn’t sound like that big of a price difference.
I’m not sure you have a bad option between the two.

November 29, 2007 at 6:46 pmThanks for the info, guys.
No, $120 isn’t a lot but I’m putting an entire system together and if I’m careful about choosing each vendor wisely the savings can be significant.
I had never heard of transintl before. Is that a proven good vendor for memory?
Thanks again.

November 29, 2007 at 7:53 pmHeard that both are good.
Purchased 8 GB recently from OWC. Had intermittent errors, probably due to bad RAM, after 4 months; they replaced the RAM immediately and without hassle.

December 1, 2007 at 10:45 amI’ve been using Trans International for about 4 years, upgraded 7 Macs and never had a problem. They are in Orange County so I get my RAM next day after ordering. Just recently bought the 8GB upgrade kit for my Mac Pro 4x3Ghz, its been working great for the last few weeks.
If you order from this link you get a little discount. I think it’s the MacWorld discount link.
