On render: this file is in use….
Do you ever get that error when you’re rendering, something like: failed to complete action, this file is in use by another application. ??
I used to get this error from time to distant time when rendering to the Xsan while working in Final Cut. Just hit OK and hit render and it works.
Now I’m rendering to my locally mounted G-Speed and it seems to be happening 1 out of 15 times I hit render (doing multiple versions of a title treatment, stacked some 10 high in my timeline).
I always chalked it up to Xsan bugs. But this RAID is only on my machine, I have full permissions.

Yes.
Do I know how to fix it? No.
Does it usually go away after trying to re-render? Yes.
Does it go away after I trash all the render files are start over? Usually.
You don’t have any CMYK stills in your timeline, do you? Yes.No.Maybe

To illustrate how weird this error really is, if you have a Finder window open and have a preview column visible and have your clip playing in that little QT preview window, FCP will assume the file is in use with another application.

Go to System Preferences/Spotlight/Privacy and drag your video and audio render folders into the window. This will prevent Spotlight from searching those folders. Since I did this, I haven’t had the problem.

Wouldn’t these folders be on your media drive(s) along with all other project-specific media other than the project file? If that’s the case then simply drag the drive/RAID icon into Spotlight’s privacy window.

I suppose that would work as well, but the problem is with the render files. You can also just disable Spotlight altogether.

I wonder why there isn’t a way to select only local disks for Spotilight.

Curious about Spotlight… because if I’m not mistaken, Spotlight cannot scan an XSAN array because of it’s particular filesystem. (which makes for searching for files on an XSAN futile. it’s really crappy when you have to wade through 14TB of storage for something you lost)

Here’s a curious one for all of you.
Why is it that when you make a change to a timeline, export it and try to overwrite the old file, it will tell you that the file cannot be overwritten because the file is in use? The curious part is that if I have multiple locations where this file exists, it will write some of them but not all of them.
Let me give you an example… I am editing a series for the Outdoor Channel and the show open and close has not been approved yet. I have made minor changes due to misspellings. I have two shows in the process and needed a place holder for the moment. Both are using a temp open and close – both are the same files for each project. I could overwrite the files on one volume but not on the other.
There are no open versions (or active) of these files anywhere except on these volumes, of which, are not open in FCP. Hmmmm….. (scratching my head)
This has been plaguing me for the past three years. Finally, I just end up writing an alternative file, deleting the old version and renaming the new file to match the old.

Yep. That’s a problem I think started with FCP 5? i don’t think anyone knows a way around it except to save as something else. a pain.
