Export from Timeline using QT Conversion PROBLEM
Hi,
I am running Final Cut Studio 2 on a Mac book Pro, 2.33GHz Intel Core Duo with 2GB RAM.
I am trying to export short clips, less than a minute long, using the QT conversion option. with no compressor codecs for an uncompressed file.
The Sequences are fully rendered and there are no effects on them.
However…
When the .mov is exported the playback is terrible. The images sticks after a few seconds and the audio is really jerky.I desperately need to get these files exported our pretty soon.. can anyone advise me? I am indeed a FCP novice as I have been using Avid for the past 10 years…

The playback of your exported clips is totally dependant on the transfer rate of the hard drive(s) you’ve exported the clips to. Uncompressed video needs a high transfer rate, much more than the compressed clips you were probably editing with. For example, if you’ve exported your uncompressed clips to your startup drive and are trying to play them back it won’t work because the hard drive is too slow. Uncompressed video playback needs a RAID array made up of 4 or 5 hard drives minimum.

Thought that my drive might be the problem…. It’s a USB!
Um My hard drive is 7200RPM shouldn’t that be fast enough?I am a bit of a technical innocent!

The rotation speed (7200rpm) of your USB drive is fast enough but the fact that it’s a USB drive is not so good. It’s generally considered that a USB connection cannot sustain the transfer rates needed to edit with, even if you’re editing DV25 (DV NTSC) which has the lowest video bit stream of all the video codecs. Even though you may not be having editing issues now, you would be if you’re trying to edit multiple streams of video down the road and not having dropped frames during playback.
Minimum recommendation for DV NTSC editing is to use firewire 400 or 800 hard drives. You never said what your aquisition format was but you did mention that you’re trying to play back an uncompressed version of your project which is definitely too high a video stream for your USB drive to manage. It’s even too high of a transfer rate for firewire. As I said in my previous post, in order to play back even one stream of uncompressed you need a hard drive array, made up of 4 or 5 SATA-type hard drives all working together and acting as one hard drive.
These days, with new codecs such as Apple’s ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 HQ (the HD version) it sort of makes using uncompressed obsolete. The beauty of this new codec is that it’s virtually identical to uncompressed, creates much lower file sizes AND with much lower transfer rates, so much lower in fact, that it’s almost in firewire editing territory.
ProRes 422 is available starting in FCP 6 and if you have this version you owe it to yourself to try it out.

I think this is also my problem. I am working with a Mac Pro G5, 2X 500 inboard HD, 1.5 TB external USB HD (that has all the raw footage), 4 gig Ram, FCP 6.0.6 and am trying to export QT conversion, best quality H264, 720X480 (16:9). The project is 2 hours long, 4 camera shoot, no effects at all.
It has been exporting for 11 hours, seems stuck at 14% complete (for at least 3 hours) and estimated time for completion is 2 days.
Is there any way to speed this up? If I were to buy an external fire wire drive would it take a long time to transfer everything to the Fire wire? Would it speed up the project immensely?
I’m already late with this project.
Please advise.
