  • Media Manager and effect sizing

so I had a project loaded in as offline RT in FCP 6.01. The editors worked on it for a few days then wanted to upres the final sequence. The offline sequence had lots fo pictures, titles and other graphics that were worked on pretty extensively. Trouble is when I ran the sequence through media manager the elements didn’t scale properly to the new uncompressed sequence. I noticed they used the scale attribute to adjust the size s everything ended up being half the size it shoudl have been. Lots of the positioning and keyframing was also incorrect.

what I was wondering for the future is is there shortcut to fix problems like this? Or a way to plan around it better?

    Easy answer: Don’t use off-line!

We have been using off-line RT extensively over the past three years. As shows get more complex and graphics become more a part of the off-line process, this workflow just doesn’t make sense anymore.

I do reality TV, where we have MOUNTAINS of source material. We use Off-line RT because we HAVE to, not because we want to.

I WANT to leave “off-line” behind, but the fifty terrabytes of media that we’re regularlly drawing on would have to be quadrupled (at least) to do what we do.

There is no magic solution to your problem other than use an off-line codec that is the same size as your final frame. OFf-line RT is approx 50%, which accounts for all of the graphics being out of whack.

    Good luck.

    Didn’t have much choice.

For next time I think I’m going to create a custom preset that uses offlineRt quality but matches the size of the final project.

How did you use Media Manager? Did you copy the sequence of use the make offline option? I usually recapture HDV or HDCam that has been edited as DV codec and have not had scaling problems when I use Media Manager to create offline, set the compression to HD uncompressed and then recapture. It seems to scale SD DV codec to HD uncompressed without any issues.

    Michael,

DV is full size, so therefore, it’s not a problem. The off-line RT codec is the problem because it creates a 320 X 240 size image which is why the grfx are so whacked.

Bottom line, if you’re doing a lot of grfx in off-line, using the “off-line RT” codec is not a good idea.

[Mark Raudonis] “The off-line RT codec is the problem because it creates a 320 X 240 size image which is why the grfx are so whacked.”

Tragic. I am glad I have never had to go below DV.

    thanks for the warning

I did actually have to use the copy method since the media manager refused to correctly process the speed adjusted clips and kept giving me errors. I had to do a copy of the sequence in the uncompressed codec them made the media offline manually before recapturing.

I’ll have to see if that’s where the problem happened.
