A lot of reality shows on the E! network have this cut:

It usually lasts half a second, the first video quickly moves up/down or left/right, and during the cut it looks as if the video were a film strip getting “caught” or torn in the projector or something.

Of course moving the video is easy, but it’s the “film strip” effect that I can’t figure out.

I can email anyone a sample of the cut, anyone know how they do it?

It’s just a slide move with the frame duplicated which is blurring and a dip to white transition it appears. Then it just reverses to reveal the incoming video.

You can build something like this quite easily in FCP or it’s more likely they’re just using a plug-in. I would build this as a Nest in FCP so all you have to do is keep switching out the video elements each time you want to use the transition. I do this all the time for Good Eats for a custom ViewMaster transition we created.

Look at the Bad TV filter – that will get you pretty close. There’s a flash to white – which is prob just a quick dip to color transition between the two clips. Nest them and then use the Bad TV – that’s how you can get the scrolling and some interference lines and even static if you want.
