Monitoring via DSR for CC work
Posted by Stephensf on November 4, 2007 at 9:59 pmHello, I am dipping my toe into the world of Colour correction in FCP but at work, although we have AJA cards linked up to broadcast monitors, my particular machine is linked up to a broadcast monitor via firewire out of my mac through my DSR machine.
I am presuming this is not really ideal for getting a true sense of what the colours will look like but is it usable or not?Walter Biscardi replied 18 years, 6 months ago 4 Members · 5 Replies -

November 4, 2007 at 10:41 pmIts not the DSR and FW that would be the weak link here.
They would simply pass the digital signal.
(Assuming you are working in DV.)The significant limitation would be in the type and quality of the video monitor.

Actually, that’s precisely what the footage will look like if you’re laying it back to that deck, so it’s a good setup if you’re working in the DV codec.
You’re good as long as you’re color correcting in FCP. If you want to use Color, that does not support any firewire devices except the Io HD.

November 5, 2007 at 12:05 amWell, i’d really like to start using Color. Do you think firewire is something they will support at some later stage?
Thanks -

November 5, 2007 at 11:33 amAs Walter says, the only device that you can use now to monitor color via FW is the AJA IOHD, but I thing that means around 3.000 US$ or so. If you just want monitoring, you have much cheaper options. Having a good monitor, is a pity that you can only use it via DSR.

Thanks”No clue honestly. They keep talking like it might happen, but no clue on when/if it will happen.
