  • Can You Get Two Streams?

I was at a SAN demo the other day that was playing out two streams of HD (1080p30, Apple 10bit Uncompressed) to two different FCP stations. (5 frame edits both systems accessing the same media).
    Impressive.
However, I could not get the system to play two streams on the same FCP station. (I was doing a simple super over another clip in the timeline.) The rep said it was NOT because their SAN couldn’t push that much information to FCP, but that FCP couldn’t handle it.
Is that right? Even if I do have a super duper RAID, FCP can’t really handle more than one stream of HD uncompressed at a time? Every dissolve has to be a render and every key over another render, etc.?
    What about QresHD?

    [Countdown] “What about QresHD?

ProRes and ProResHQ are highly optimized for rt and is way way better than anything FCP has ever had in the past. It automatically scales the video back and shows you dynamic rt, but you can keep adding filters, layers, all kinds of stuff and it’ll play back in rt. The resolution gets knocked down a bit when you playback and have a bunch of filters, but it’s totally visible, and in real time. It’s truly awesome. Once you see how great ProResHQ is, you might never think of uncompressed again. I am getting to be that way.

I’ve only ever been able to get ONE stream of 10-bit uncompressed 1080, not matter what the speed of my Raid or machine I ran it on. I heard this was a limitation of FCP.

[Shane Ross] “I heard this was a limitation of FCP.”

    I’m sure it undoubtedly is.
