Just got a call from an non-profit client of mine who helps individuals with Development Disabilities. They are helping a client of theirs prepare for a presentation to a large group. He has done video interviews with people and has photos and graphics. Someone has started putting it together in iMovie to make the DVD for the presentation. They want it to look “more professional” so they want to use FCP.

Since I am not familiar with iMovie my question is: Can you piece together video and stills in iMovie and make it look nice?

I looked at the iMovie website and it looks like you can. I told them that I would think someone that knows what they are doing could do it in iMovie. It’s not necessarily the software, it’s the operator. I told them I would post this to see what responses I get. (I searched iMovie on the site but didn’t come up with anytyhing)

    Thanks.

[DAFsr 1] “He has done video interviews with people and has photos and graphics. Someone has started putting it together in iMovie to make the DVD for the presentation. They want it to look “more professional” so they want to use FCP. “

Unless the interviews, photos and graphics all look professional, then it never will no mater what you use to put it together.

[DAFsr 1] “so they want to use FCP.

The key word is “they”. I hope “they” have lots of time.

[DAFsr 1] ” I told them that I would think someone that knows what they are doing could do it in iMovie. It’s not necessarily the software, it’s the operator.”

    Exactly!

I remember dabbling around with imovie1 when it 1st came out. My feelings were “I’d rather use it than a linear system of playback decks, switcher, recorder and titler” imovie did a lot for the money, (free). I’m sure imovie has been used for tons of quality video.

What “they” really need is an editor because if they had one he/she would know the answer to their question in the 1st place.

Tell them to bring in what they have and you will look at it. Then give them a quote.

You can do very good looking thing in IMovie. But if they are thinking to make more videos in the future, tell them to forget about iMovie and start with FC. Soon or later they will want to shift so better spent their time learning the correct application.
