a macpro or an imac for my buddy..
Hi all,
i need some help..
my friend intends to get a mac. as i work on a macpro myself i find that a very good decision.but here’s the question:
will an imac do? (24″version)
we’ll do mainly hdv stuff, but as i do animations we might end up
with som uncompressed files to handle as well..how’s the performance of the new imac regarding uncomp files?
can you work with these files fluently in FCS2????
or should we invest more and get us the smallest macpro (‘though i think new models
are just around the corner…)thanx for any help

If you are working uncompressed HD, you are going to need drives that are faster than fw800 which is all the iMac is capable of. Get a MacPro and there will be no regrets.

I’d go with a MacPro if you can. A MacPro also gives you the option of adding a capture card for video in and out. This is great for a video monitor or digitizing HDV to something other than HDV.
There are several other benefits that I won’t mention. But that said, we have iMacs that we do edit on, but it’s mostly offline editing. We use our towers for the uncompressed stuff.

The BIGGEST problem with the a iMac is that it has only one Firewire Bus on it. This means that any video going into or out of the computer MUST share the Firewire Bus with the hard drive that the video is stored on. At times it cam get a little overloaded and cause dropped frames.
