Anyone using EditShare?
Posted by Steve Smith on October 23, 2007 at 3:17 pmour company is considering using EditShare
as our shared storage server. But it’s been hard to find any in-depth
discussions of their products.
so thought i’d ask if anyone out there
is using it and if so, how do you like it?What do you like best about it?
Have you found any big drawbacks?
Any alternatives that you like better?thanks,

October 23, 2007 at 3:39 pmTheir booth was across from the booth I was working at IBC…I got a neat pen and a t-shirt. OH, and I talked to them about it. But no real world experience. Sorry.

October 23, 2007 at 7:50 pmI purchased the 5 sp. EditShare unit with 4TB about 2 months ago for a 6 workstation facility we built. This facility only works in DV25 so we are using gigabit ethernet to the EditShare. Our first test was to ingest 40 hours of DVCAM tapes into the system using 2 capture workstations and then cutting on 4 editing workstations. Everything worked just as you would expect without any issues. It’s still early in the game but the EditShare is in use everyday and we have not noticed any problems with it or the workflow. I do have to admit that our implementation is not really a stress test for the system but it’s working for us.

November 7, 2007 at 2:22 pmWe have a 6TGB system, 8 ports (GIG E) connections. We have 14 FCP workstations (mix of old G4, G5, and MacPros). In addition we have 2 Avid systems (one on MacPro and the other on WinXP). We use all systems together. Vast majority of footage is DV25/HDV/DV50. However, I’ve worked with uncompressed SD video with no issues (but not all workstations were “online” at this time). Up until a month ago, this system was flawless, however, system had a motherboard failure. EditShare shipped me a new chassis, changed back all of the guts (took me 30-minutes to complete), and we were back up…sort of. Since then we have had some serious issues with connection and logging off (locks the entire workstation). EditShare is working with me and I think we are close to solving the issue.
Anyway, the point is that until this catastrophe, EditShare was great. There tech support and general follow-up has been good. Demoed a few systems, no one played as friendly with both Avid and FCP environments, and no one came in at that cost.
I hope this helps.
