  • eSATA raid solution with swappable drives…

Posted by Bob Pierce on October 19, 2007 at 3:38 pm

    Hi Everyone…
I know the topic of sata raids has been (and continues to be) covered ad nauseum here, but my question has to do with some of the solutions out there that offer swappable drives.

I’m finding these days that projects never seem to definitively end, and so I end up collecting piles of firewire drives (literally). I’d like to get things in order and have a single, fast and big (2 TB or so) box that I could, as needed, expand with swappable drives.

I know that there are products out there that offer this, but I wanted to get some feedback from you guys before I invest.
    Thanks!

I don’t think anyone builds better or more advanced boxes than CalDigit… They are built like tanks and are backed by a great group.

I’ll second CalDigit. I have two of their eSATA BOXES next to my computer (1.5Tb and 500GB) and use them daily. I also have their Firewire VR swappable unit. But that is for P2 backup.

For the other end of the spectrum (the cheap end) check out Norco (you’ll find a banner ad for them here on the bottom left column). I got their 12-bay multilane enclosure. It is definately NOT built like a tank, it’s ugly, and it was loud until I replaced the fans with quiet ones. And the drive trays are a bit frustrating. But getting that thing saved me a ridiculous amount of money.

    Sean,

Are you talking about the Norco 1240 Box? What card are you using with it?

If you just want an inexpensive, well made box, go to pc-pitstop.com (with the hyphen!) and see what best fits your needs. Near as I can tell, these are the same enclosures that people like Mac Gurus sell for more than 2X the price. They also sell some SATA & SAS controller cards, but you’ll have to do your homework to figure out which ones work on your Mac.

Thanks, guys (how come there are never any gals in here?).
I’ll check those out. I have read though that Walter Biscardi had terrible problems with Caldigit so I was kinda avoiding them, but maybe that was an anomoly.

Yeah that’s the one. I’m actually using it for my iSCSI SAN box, which uses a 3ware 9550SX card.

But it should work with any SATA card if you use the right cables and/or adapters.

I guess it’s a no go. The 1240 is a port multiplier so it won’t work with a SATA Card. just Mini-sas connectors but still SATA.
