Matrox MXO question for Shane
I read this on an mxo blog: (you being quoted)
“A side-by-side comparison of the MXO/ACD combination with an HD color correction monitor convinced me – a few adjustments and they looked identical!”
I think I may have asked before and I understand the COLOR matches up, but with the limited contrast ratio on LCD panels compared to a CRT are you saying that you can color correct for color AS WELL AS CONTRAST? with the mxo?
I have $ 1,500 burning a hole in my pocket.
I was going to buy a sony pvm 14L5/1 but I could just as easily buy the mxo instead and color correct to a flat panel.
What would you do, knowing what you know?

Well, contrast is an issue on ALL HD LCDs. Some are better than others (TV Logic is the best here, not counting the eCinema CRT replacement that is WAY too expensive for anyone other than post facilities), but the blacks and the contrast ratio just don’t match HD CRTs. I know that the average contrast ratio of LCDs is 1000:1…and I don’t know where the ACD falls in this area. But I think the other monitors, that were designed for this, would perform a little better. But I cannot tell without doing a side by side comparison. I’ll have to see if I can do that.

That will get you the MXO…so if you already have the monitor, then you are set there. I’d be shocked if you could find a PVM 14L5 for that price now. They are only available on eBay, or broadcast stores that still have them, and demand is high. But that will get you ONLY the monitor, not the capture card needed to get the image to the monitor. Or do you have that already?
If it was between the MXO/ACD and the PVM…I’d go for the PVM. That is the better option…better contrast ratio. But if your funds are limited, then the MXO option is the way to go. $2000 and you are set. All other HD LCDs are $4500 and up…JUST for the monitor. Then another $1000-$3000 for the HD capture card. The MXO/ACD option is affordable, and very accurate, as I stated. And as all inexpensive options go, there are some drawbacks, and some areas where the option is weak in comparison to the more expensive models.
Would I trust it? Yes, I would.

Yep, the best one I’ve seen so far, and one that I would install into my shop to replace my Sony PVM series is the TV-Logic 24″ HD LCD. Starts at $8,000 US.
