    HEy guys,

working tandem with a friend and need a couple questions answered for peace of mind–

-He has shot some footage via analog Betacam SP and we captured it via AJA IO using codec ‘uncompressed 8 bit to DV50’

He plans to edit the footage via is FCP system but was concerned about the following:

A- since capturing to a DV50 codec results in default setting of 720×480 instead of a native 601 of 720×486, we were concerned of any ‘variances’ that might arise if we were to later export back to uncompressed 8 bit.

B- is there any interpolation issues or interlacing issues and so forth if mixing graphics with these diffferent aspects or what if we later export back to 486?

C- this brings up another question. Is DV50 a compressed codec? Meaning if I use the AJA IO 8 bit to DV50 capture codec, Can I later export back out uncompressed 8bit to restore the uncompression or do I need to batch capture the final sequence at uncompressed 8bit? Seems like a simple question but I need to know. thanks!

    Rick

As you says DV50 is 8b compressed. Once you compress you loos part of the original information and if you export to an Uncompressed codec you WILL NOT recover that information. You will only get a bigger file and the same quality. If you go to master in 8b Uncompressed you will get a better picture if you capture and edit directly with that codec.
About the aspect ratio and the 486 issue, sorry I can not help you. I’m in PAL land.
    Cheers,
    Rafael

AJA has provided you with DV-50 settings. Stick with those presets & you’ll be fine. For output to beta, keep your timeline at DV50, and set your output through the Io to the appropriate NTSC 525 Betacam setting.
